Raven extends the coverage of British publications begun by W.H. McBurney's Check List of English Prose Fiction, 1700-1739 (1960) and J.C. Beasley's Checklist of Prose Fiction Published in England, 1740-1749 (1972). All three compilers are in debt to A. Esdaile's List of English Tales and Prose Romances Printed Before 1740 (1912), and Andrew Block's English Novel, 1740-1850 (2nd ed., 1961). As in McBurney and Beasley, each entry in Raven includes information on authorship, bookselling, pricing, and republication for printings from London, Ireland, and Scotland, whether or not they have survived. Raven also provides references to reviews from the Monthly and the Critical, and notes inclusion in the first microfiche edition of the Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue (1983). The list is indexed by author, translator, and title. Raven also offers the reader an informative, well-documented introduction, complemented by statistical tables and figures, that provides a background to the period through a discussion of the trends of fiction writing, publishing, and distribution, and the makeup and tastes of the reading public. Although interesting reading for its own sake, the catalog alone will probably be used by graduate and faculty researchers. The introduction, however, broadens the audience of this work, making it of interest to any undergraduate English major studying the literature of the 18th century.-R. Stuhr-Rommereim, University of Kansas
