Appeared in Choice on 1989-12:
A fine book in the best tradition of the publisher. This is a very good translation of the Symposium with a sane and very useful introduction that skillfully and clearly places the dialogue in its philosophic context. There are good explanatory notes at the foot of the page, and a good, up-to-date selected bibliography of works in English at the end. The translators have, properly, not followed "the fashion of rendering each Greek word consistently." Hurrah! This is the edition to assign to undergraduates beginning the study of philosophy. A worthy purchase and the price (for paper) is right. All levels. N. A. Greenberg Oberlin College
Appeared in Library Journal on 2006-07-01:
This year's crop of Penguin "Great Ideas" volumes offers another eclectic dozen works that shaped society from the ancient Greeks to the 20th century. The books are fairly no frills, but the price isn't bad. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
