Appeared in Choice on 1989-09:
Indirectly descended from a series of smaller guides originally published in the Popular Culture Association Newsletter (1971- ), this directory identifies collections, large and small, of interest for popular culture research in academic, public, industrial, and even private libraries and museums. The editors are among the principal popular culture scholars in the US; their intent is to continue to expand this work in subsequent editions. Entries were solicited from institutions, organizations, and individuals in the US and Canada. Listings are organized by state or province and city. Collection name, address, phone number, and contact person are given, with information about access and restrictions. Collections are generally well described, with the number of items or size of holdings indicated. There are indexes by collection names and by subject; the latter is detailed but would benefit from more thorough cross-referencing. The major collections listed here are identified elsewhere; the great value of this work is, first, its grasp of what the study of popular culture is, and, second, its inclusion of many out-of-the-way collections and of materials generally not cataloged and often overlooked in standard approaches to subject collections. Both academic and large public libraries. -J. Fiore, Michigan State University
