A Look Inside
Full Text Reviews
Appeared in Choice on 1989-10:
Weiss has attempted to cite every appearance of every short story published by a Canadian during the years indicated. The result is a substantial volume, which cites nearly 20,000 appearances of 14,314 short stories penned by 4,966 authors, a nearly comprehensive record of the Canadian short story for this brief window of time. As such, it is a valuable reference work and a unique resource. Following a brief introduction in which the compiler presents his methodology and outlines his goals and objectives, there is a guide to the periodicals and collections cited. The bulk of the volume is the listing of stories, in alphabetical order by author. The remaining third of the book is an alphabetical index of titles. The compiler addresses the problem of whether an author about whom little is known is Canadian by assuming (unless he has information to the contrary) that writers who appear in Canadian publications are Canadian. But he marks the questionable authors with a dagger to alert the user. It should also be noted that the bibliography is limited to fiction written for adults. Since references to the works of better-known authors are available elsewhere, the strength of this work lies in providing access to the obscure. This makes it an essential addition to any library with an even passing interest in Canadian literature. -M. M. Bohn, University of Nebraska at Omaha

Main Description
This bibliography endeavors to record every short story written in English by a Canadian author and first published during the period 19501983, and contains 20,000 citations to stories by more than 5,300 authors. Organized alphabetically by author's last name, it includes references to anthology and story-collection appearances by these authors, thus providing a complete publishing history of each story cited. Hundreds of Canadian periodicals and dozens of anthologies were searched; in addition, the bibliography cites appearances by Canadian stories in foreign books and periodicals.
