Shows the efforts of German-appointed leader Chaim Rumkowski to save the Jewish community during the Nazi occupation of Lodz, Poland, in World War II. Documents Rumkowski's establishment of an entire society, including schools, industries, and a postal system. Relates intimate details of life in the last surviving Jewish ghetto in Poland and examines the policies of obedience and adaptation, submission and compliance.
