A Look Inside

Appeared in Choice on 1990-01:
A landmark study of the music of the Samoan islands group, this handsomely printed and bound volume was written by a prominent ethnomusicologist from New Zealand. It is based on three years of field work in the islands, 1966-69. In the best tradition of musical scholarship, the author clearly explains both linguistic and notational orthographies before proceeding to the body of the work. The initial three chapters, dealing with historical and cultural matters, giving a musical ethnology or overview, and treating musical instruments, plus the summary/analysis in Chapter 9 and the appendix ("Post-European Samoan Musical Influence") could be profitably read by someone desiring basic information and not wishing the detailed analysis of Chapters 4-8. The author's decision to classify songs by musical and performance characteristics rather than function is perhaps questionable. The middle chapters treat solo songs, unison songs, responsorial songs, responsorial songs associated with dance, and polyphonic songs in great detail, with texts provided both in Samoan and in translation. This study emphasizes musical analysis over anthropological data, as seen in the 185 musical examples. Completing the study is a glossary of Samoan musical terms and a list of individual musicians. Moyle's study will be the basic source of information on Samoan music for years to come. Both undergraduate and graduate collections. -T. E. Miller, Kent State University
