Appeared in Choice on 1986-03:
Written with an elegance and clarity of style as noteworthy as its scholarship is impressive, this detailed analysis of the economic, social, and political history of the southern part of the Massif Central will fascinate advanced students of modern French rural society. In concentrating upon the evolving political awareness of relatively isolated peasant communities, Jones (University of Birmingham, England) has entered an area generally neglected by historians of 18th- and 19th-century France, with the exception of R. Magraw's France 1815-1914: The Bourgeois Century (1983). The central question that Jones seeks to answer is how and why the rural population of the southern Massif Central reached an accommodation with the French liberal state in the 19th century. The many faceted answer is based upon massive research in national, departmental, communal, and diocesan archives, plus several hundred secondary sources, all listed in the bibliography. The text is supplemented with plates, maps, figures, and tables. A detailed index adds to the usefulness of the book. The publisher, not surprisingly, also deserves commendation for a product that is practically perfect in every respect. Highly recommended for academic libraries with strong French collections.-J.S. Gassner, University of Albuquerque

Description for Bookstore
This book offers a comprehensive account of the rhythms of rural life over some three or four generations, but the main emphasis is on the political responses of the peasantry in an age of revolutionary experimentation with democratic institutions.
Description for Library
This is a study of rural society, with particular reference to the peasantry. It focuses on four departments forming the southern perimeter of the highland plateau of central France, and spans a century which marked the apogee of peasant civilisation in this region and which witnessed the revolutions of 1789 and 1848. The book offers a comprehensive account of the rhythms of rural life over some three or four generations, but the main emphasis is on the political responses of the peasantry in an age of revolutionary experimentation with democratic institutions.
Main Description
This is a study of rural society, with particular reference to the peasantry. It focuses on an area of France which is defined as the southern Massif Central, the four departments forming the southern perimeter of the highland plateau of central France, and spans a century which marked the apogee of peasant civilisation in this region and which witnessed the revolutions of 1789 and 1848. The book adopts a broadly cultural definition of the peasantry, and offers a comprehensive account of the rhythms of rural life over some three or four generations. However, the main emphasis is on the political responses of the peasantry in an age of revolutionary experimentation with democratic institutions. As such the book is a social history of political behaviour at the grass roots.
