A Look Inside
Full Text Reviews
Appeared in Choice on 1987-10:
This volume contains the identifications of all the bright stars seen in the sky as described in most of the major old catalogs. The reader can find the designations given to stars by Ptolemy, Tycho, Flamsteed, or in 20 other catalogs. The data are arranged by constellations, and a brief description of the meaning and the origin is given for each, including some of that now not used but that were introduced for short times in the past. The book would be of use to historians of science or to others who might need to know the designation of certain stars used in the past. The listings are restricted to stars brighter than 5.5 magnitudes, which means that the catalog listings are incomplete. It would have been helpful if the authors had included Yale's Bright Star Catalogue designation for these stars as that has become the modern standard (4th rev. ed., compiled by Dorrit Hoffleit, 1982). Obviously a large amount of work has gone into this compilation; however, most undergraduate libraries will not need this volume.-H. Albers, Vassar College
