Appeared in Choice on 1996-01:
Although the dust jacket claims this volume is "the first major reference work to focus on the writers whose lives and works quintessentially define the various factors of American life," most academic reference collections will already possess a number of titles that present similar information. Roth (Claremont McKenna College) has brought together short biographical and critical essays on 145 authors who represent various ethnic, regional, or topical viewpoints in American fiction. Entries are arranged in 14 sections, covering regions such as the West or New England, ethnic groups (e.g., Jews or Native Americans), gender roles (women or gay authors), and topics (war or the expatriate experience). Each three- to four-page entry includes birth and death dates, a list of principal works of fiction and writings in other genres, notable achievements, a short biographical sketch, a critical analysis of central themes, and a bibliography of suggested criticism. Although a list of contributors is provided, entries are not signed; however, each section is introduced by a signed essay. Criteria for selection are sometimes unclear; for example, Rita Dove and Terry McMillan are included, but not Maya Angelou. Some entries suffer from repetition and poor organization. An appendix provides lists of additional authors in each category, and a general index completes the volume. Most reference departments will have access to similar and more comprehensive material in the various series from Gale, Magill, Scribner, and St. James. Not recommended, except for the circulating collection, where it may prove useful to instructors developing reading curricula. B. Juhl; University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
