Appeared in Choice on 2002-06-01:
The three volumes of this solid addition to the growing reference literature on women in the US each cover a separate period: 1585-1820, 1820-1900, and 1900 to the present. Each begins with a brief time line, a table of contents (v.1 lists contents for all the volumes), and essays with bibliographies that situate women in the context of the period (e.g., "Domestic Life in the Colonial Years"). The volumes end with illustrative historical documents from the period and a selected bibliography. The volumes are chiefly devoted to alphabetically arranged articles on a variety of topics--biographies, events, organizations, court cases, cultural references. Entries range from 120 to 1,000 words and include occasional black-and-white illustrations. Highlighted articles under the categories "Trailblazers" and "Women's Firsts" are scattered among the entries and can be found only through the general index for the set at the end of volume 3. See references are indicated by boldface; see also references follow entries. Articles are authoritative, but accessibly written for a broad audience. Entries cover diverse American populations but do not attempt to be comprehensive in scope; hence this encyclopedia complements rather than replaces similar works, e.g., Kathryn Cullen-DuPont's The Encyclopedia of Women's History in America (CH, Sep'96), Elizabeth Frost-Knappman's The ABC-CLIO Companion to Women's Progress in America (CH, Dec'94), and The Reader's Companion to US Women's History, ed. by Wilma Mankiller et al. (CH, Jun'98). Recommended for all collections, particularly those that lack these other sources. G. M. Herrmann SUNY College at Cortland
