This magnum opus is packed with carefully researched, up-to-date facts and figures. To the best of this author's knowledge, it has no single equal. The seventh edition contains valuable updates on health/safety issues missing from the previous edition (6th ed., 2008; 1st ed., 1966). It also contains over 30 tables of data and lists many useful websites for additional chemical and biochemical data. An important topic presented focuses on impurities in virgin chemical substances that arise from the storage of the container they are in--metal drums or plastic containers--and how to remove them. Armarego (Australian National Univ.) and Chai (Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore) provide detailed, clear presentations on chemical/physical methods for purifying organic and inorganic compounds as well as biochemicals, including recrystallization, distillation, electrophoresis, and several others. A separate chapter discusses the use and efficiency of catalysts. Chapter 8, "Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology," addresses the critical issue of the purity of this class of materials. An index of Chemical Abstract Service Registry Numbers facilitates locating compounds with more than one name. This book's strengths are its choice of topics, the breadth and depth of information, its organization and easy access to information, and extensive current literature references.
