A Look Inside
Full Text Reviews
Appeared in Choice on 1995-09:
The 3rd edition of this meticulous bilingual bibliography lists 7,375 Canadian bibliographies (more than 3 times as many as the 2nd edition, 1972) from all subject areas, published between 1798 and mid-1993. Each entry is formatted according to international bibliographic standards, and includes an often detailed annotation with such useful information as microform editions. Only one library location is given for each title. Entries are arranged by subject class, then by year of publication and author. More than 50,000 additional access points are provided by author, title, and English and French subject indexes. There is also a section of brief entries (arranged alphabetically by author) and a list of serial titles searched. Particularly helpful is the substantial introduction, which defines "bibliography," "Canadian," and "Canadian Studies," and gives the bibliography's criteria for inclusion and exclusion. Although one may regret some exclusions (e.g., "bibliographies appended to monographs" and "bibliographies appended to thesis [sic]"), the compilers seem to have followed these criteria systematically and comprehensively. The only major weakness of this splendid, albeit unwieldy, volume is the binding, which will not stand up to heavy reference use. Essential for all Canadiana collections at every level. J. D. Blackwell; formerly, St. Francis Xavier University
