A Look Inside
Full Text Reviews
Appeared in Choice on 1993-11:
Dupuy's well-known encyclopedia, here in its fourth edition, incorporates some happy improvements over the second revised (i.e., third) edition (1986). Physically, page size is some 15% larger, which with a typeface both larger and higher in contrast, makes this edition much easier to read. The chronological coverage has been extended to 1991 and some older sections have been rewritten (most notably that on ancient China), and readers will welcome an improved bibliography and some new maps. Unfortunately, some faults endure, including spots of weak text; for example, although current understanding of the military organization of the Old Babylonian period is imperfect, it is substantially superior to the dynastic recitation Dupuy offers. This is not the only place where military history degenerates into a history of peoples. The illustrations could also be improved: some are outdated woodcuts, others are misleading (a tank said to have been used by the Afrika Korps is far too late a model to have seen anything but twilight service in that campaign). These failings are slight compared with the work's general utility, however, and librarians who have learned the value of prior editions will want this improved version. P. L.
